“You get to collaborate with like-minded teachers when you teach in an international school.” Nick Kendell

1. A Spirit of Adventure and Openness:
International teachers are, by nature, adventurous souls. They possess a willingness to step outside their comfort zones, embrace the unknown, and immerse themselves in new cultures. This openness extends beyond geographical boundaries; it encompasses a genuine curiosity about different perspectives and a desire to learn from diverse communities.
These educators are prepared to pack their bags and move halfway across the world, seeking new experiences and challenges.
This shared spirit creates a unique bond. They understand each other’s journeys, the excitement and anxieties that come with living and working in a foreign country.
They’re a community of explorers, supporting each other as they navigate new cultures and build new lives.
2. Adaptability and Resilience:

Living and working in a foreign country requires immense adaptability. International teachers navigate new educational systems, cultural norms, and often, language barriers. They are resilient, capable of overcoming challenges and finding creative solutions to unexpected situations. The ability to “go with the flow” is a vital asset.
3. Passion for Global Learning:
A deep passion for global learning is a hallmark of international teachers. They believe in the power of education to bridge cultural divides and foster understanding between people from different backgrounds. They strive to create inclusive classrooms that celebrate diversity and promote intercultural dialogue.
4. Cultural Sensitivity and Empathy:

International teachers demonstrate a high degree of cultural sensitivity and empathy. They recognize and respect cultural differences, valuing the richness of human experience. They are committed to creating a safe and supportive learning environment for students from all backgrounds.
5. Strong Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
The ability to build relationships with students, parents, and colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds is crucial. International teachers possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, enabling them to connect with others and foster a sense of community.
6. Commitment to Professional Growth:
International teachers are lifelong learners, committed to continuous professional development. They are eager to embrace new teaching methodologies, integrate technology into their classrooms, and stay abreast of educational trends. They value the opportunity to learn from their colleagues and contribute to a collaborative learning environment.
7. A Desire to Make a Difference:

At the heart of every international teacher lies a desire to make a difference. They are passionate about empowering students to become responsible and engaged global citizens. They believe in the transformative power of education and strive to create a positive impact on the lives of their students and the wider community.
8. Resourcefulness and Problem-Solving Skills:
Teaching in an international setting often presents unique challenges. International teachers are resourceful and possess strong problem-solving skills. They are adept at finding creative solutions to logistical issues, adapting to limited resources, and overcoming unexpected obstacles.
9. A Sense of Community:
International teachers often form close-knit communities, providing each other with support and encouragement. They understand the unique challenges and rewards of living and working abroad and create a sense of belonging for their fellow educators.
10. A Global Perspective:
Perhaps most importantly, international teachers possess a global perspective. They see the world as interconnected and strive to instill in their students a sense of global citizenship. They believe in the importance of understanding and appreciating different cultures and perspectives.
These qualities, woven together, create a unique and powerful force for positive change in the world. International teachers are not just educators; they are cultural ambassadors, bridge builders, and agents of global understanding. They embody the spirit of adventure, adaptability, and a deep commitment to making a difference.
I consider myself incredibly lucky to have discovered a profession that seamlessly blends my passion for education with the amazing colleagues, travel opportunities and cultural experiences of living overseas. Rose

Connect with Kindred Spirits
If you’re an educator who is passionate about global learning, who values cultural sensitivity, and who has a spirit of adventure, you’ll find like-minded teachers in an international school.
The international school experience is more than just a job; it’s a journey of personal and professional growth. It’s an opportunity to connect with educators from around the world, to make a difference in the lives of students, and to be part of something truly special.
One thing I am loving is the sense of community amongst all the staff and families. If you have ever worked at summer camp then you will understand. You make friends fast and you meet so many people who are on the same frequency as you. Everyone understands the position you are in and how you feel. They will offer you help crockery, directions, beer and pretty much anything you could ever wish for. It appears impossible not to have fun. Inevitably you work stupidly hard, but it is one BIG adventure. Accept invitations. Make plans. Invite people for dinner, but more than anything, have fun!
