Congratulations! You’ve secured an exciting new teaching position abroad. Now, what about your profile with Search Associates?

Should I tell you about my new job when I start there? I am currently working through the process of submitting supporting documents and my visa application. Candidate question

When should you deactivate your profile?

Let us know as soon as you verbally agree to, or sign, a contract.  We understand that some candidates may feel unsure about doing this straight away, but if there are any problems with your new position, it’s just a matter of letting us know and we can easily reinstate your active status.

Transparency is Key: Search Associates requires you to report any job placement, even if found independently. This helps us keep our database accurate and saves everyone time. We ask that you deactivate your file within 7 days of finding new employment. This can be done from ‘Your availability’ on the front page of your dashboard. Registration with Search Associates requires you to communicate with us regarding any job placement, whether through us or otherwise. You need to provide the name and location of the school that hired you and how you obtained this position. This ensures recruiters only see currently available candidates, avoiding any confusion and wasted time.

Please also let us know if your spouse, partner, or ‘significant other’ (at the time of my placement) is also be placed — full-time or nearly full-time — in the same school within 12 months of your starting date if they have previously been an actively registered Search Associates candidate.

There is more information regarding our expectations concerning this in “Your Agreement” on your dashboard. Following through on your registration commitment demonstrates professionalism.

Candidate availability can become an issue when they don’t inform us about accepting new positions, leaving their application status as ‘Active.’ These candidates have broken their agreement with us. We are responsible for ensure that our active candidate’s profiles have current references, along with their CV, and that they’re free to move contractually.  Schools are searching the database for teachers to fill positions, especially from March onwards. Schools may contact candidates thinking they’re available when they’re not. This may lead to candidates being overlooked in the future. (If their file has been moved to Auto-archives and they find a new position we still need to know).

Why might a job fall through?

In the past few years, you may have heard of teachers having trouble being granted Visa’s. We understand that sometimes hiccups happen and the process is not always straightforward. These are exceptions, not the rule. The majority of placements are processed just fine. Search Associates understands situations may change, and we can reinstate your profile quickly.

Why should I do it before I get to the school?

Often we are contacted by schools who are confused as to why a new hire is still active. It sends the message that they are still looking around and are not committed to their new school.

I’m still looking but my partner has a new job

That’s great! Please stay in Active status to continue your job search, but send us an email so we don’t wonder if it’s an oversight.

If you are still looking, we recommend narrowing down your ‘areas of interest’ on the “Seeking’ tab and writing in the ‘Personal’ tab in the box marked ‘Other information regarding marital status,’ that your partner is moving to employment at a school in X country.
